It is with a great sense of gratitude and satisfaction, as an old boy of the Government Science Secondary School, Mangun in Mangu local government area of Plateau State, that I announce the 50th Anniversary of our Alma Mata.
The celebration of the Golden Jubilee, gives us an idea of what it means to be grateful in an anniversary year. Therefore, we take this opportunity with gratitude for what the school has made us to be.
In the last fifty years, a lot has happened. The boys and girls have since become men and women of substance, and are engaged in various sectors of the Nigerian economy.
We took the opportunity God gave us through our parents to be tutored by different teachers, some from Plateau State, while others from other parts of Nigeria; and even outside the shores of this country.
Indeed, the vision of our Alma Mata has guided us for decades, shaping our identity as a centre of knowledge, innovation, and societal progress.
The school has undergone several metamorphosis, starting as Mwaghavul Community Secondary School on November 27, 1975.
In 1976, it was taken over by the Plateau State Government, and was renamed Government Secondary School.
The need for the state to increase the number of science oriented schools across the three Senatorial Districts led to it being redesignated as Government Science Secondary School, some years ago.
Currently, the transformation has resulted in its being taken over by the federal government, and renamed, “Federal Government Science Technical College, Mangun”.
The old students have, without doubt, remained a major plank of the development of the school over the years in several ways.
We have returned to the school either by the sets or the old students to compliment efforts of the authorities and government to make meaningful contributions to infrastructural development.
Such contributions through the provision of computers, construction of borehole, a hostel, beds and chairs for the students, have gone a long way in arresting infrastructural decay.
Some of the old students used their connections to facilitate scholarships and taking over payments of fees and other sundry items such as food and mattresses.
Our alumni members are also found at the echelon of their careers ranging from media, law, politics, medicine, business, politics, civil service and administration.
Some are in the service of God, Chieftaincy, accountancy, academics, farming, hitech ecosystem, transportation business and banking.
Why we are not having a formal and elaborate convention is owing to the ugly situation communities in the area find themselves with regard to insecurity.
It is not news anymore that several communities have come under serious genocidal attacks in the last two years. While our hearts are with the families that lost their loved ones and property, there is more that can be done to stem the tide by the security and government.
We have also lost several of our compatriots and classmates; we however salute their courage and strength which saw all of us through the school.
On behalf of the old students, I use this medium to thank all teaching staff; past and present, and the non-teaching staff for their sacrifices for our educational growth over the years.
They have been running the school with the vision and executing the mandate of moulding and developing the many young talents for which they were custodians, and doing so, so masterfully in the past 50 years.
I appreciate the old students that have ensured we stay stronger together by promoting the Alma Mata through their offices or businesses.
As we celebrate the silver jubilee of our Alma Mater, we appreciate the fact that passing through the school has taught us many lessons of life.

The association noted that the planned elaborate convention could not be held due to the persistent insecurity affecting communities in the Mangu area, where genocidal attacks have claimed lives and property over the past two years. “Our hearts are with the families that have lost loved ones,” the release stated, calling on security agencies and government to intensify efforts to stem the violence.
MAOSA extended its appreciation to past and present teaching and non‑teaching staff for their dedication to shaping generations of students over the past 50 years. It also thanked fellow alumni for promoting the school’s legacy through their professional and personal endeavours, and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the institution’s continued growth.
