Plateau State has kicked off a three-day national conference on enhancing security and safety in road transportation. The Conference of Directors and Chief Road Traffic Officers of the Federation, themed “Enhancing National Security and Road Traffic Safety through Effective Motor Vehicle Administration,” aims to strengthen professionalism, enhance capacity building, and improve service delivery in the road transport sector.
The conference is a testament to the state’s commitment to road safety and security. The Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Davou Gyang Jatau, expressed gratitude to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for his unwavering support to the transport sector. He highlighted the state’s initiatives, including the Jos Greater Master Plan and the Tin City Metro Buses, which have improved commuting within the city.
The conference emphasized the critical role of motor vehicle administration in ensuring national security and road safety. Engr. Durojaye Babawale Olalekan, General Secretary and National Chairman’s representative, noted that a country’s ability to identify, track, and regulate vehicles and drivers directly impacts its capacity to protect lives, safeguard property, and enforce laws.
The conference identified challenges facing Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), including overemphasis on revenue generation, poor infrastructure, and lack of funding. To address these challenges, the conference advocated for a unified legal framework, digital transformation of administration processes, continuous training for VIOs, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with other agencies.
The conference provided a platform for participants to learn from Plateau State’s innovations in transport infrastructure. The state’s initiatives, such as the tracking system for motorcycles and surveillance cameras at key locations, were cited as examples of effective measures to enhance road safety and security.
The conference concluded with a call for collective commitment, political will, and technological innovation to achieve safer roads and a more efficient transportation system in Nigeria. The Government of Plateau State expressed appreciation to the national leadership of the VIOs for choosing the state as the venue for the conference.
The conference is expected to produce a communiqué outlining recommendations for improving road safety and national security through effective motor vehicle administration. The outcome of the conference will serve as a guide for policymakers and stakeholders in the transport sector.
