Jos, Plateau State – Former House of Representatives aspirant, Hon. James Yakubu, has officially opened his campaign office in Jos ahead of his bid to contest the Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general elections. The event, which attracted strong PDP members from across the constituency, marked what he described as a renewed journey to represent the people at the National Assembly.
Speaking to journalists at the unveiling, Hon. Yakubu said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains strong and its structure intact in Plateau State. He maintained that “Plateau State is PDP” and expressed confidence that the party would reclaim all its mandates in the next electoral cycle. The opening was attended by PDP local government executives of Jos North and Bassa, including chairmen Hon. Elisha Itsegek Azi and Hon. Ayiku Azankan.
Yakubu, who has sought the seat in previous election cycles, said his return is anchored on a longstanding understanding of power rotation between Jos North and Bassa. He explained that with the current occupant, Hon. Musa Agah Asama, completing the turn for Bassa, it is now Jos North’s turn to produce the next representative. He appealed to stakeholders in Bassa to support the arrangement in the spirit of fairness and continuity.
The aspirant said his 30 years of experience abroad have shaped his vision for leadership, stressing that Jos North/Bassa needs leaders who can “take the bull by the horn” to tackle insecurity and recurring attacks. While mourning communities bereaved by violence, he pledged to provide effective representation that prioritizes the safety and welfare of constituents. “I am not Christ, but I know I will do as much,” he said.
Addressing party matters, Hon. Yakubu reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, noting that the party’s structures in the northern zone remain intact despite recent defections. He described the new office as a “PDP family office” meant to harmonize activities and project aspirants for various positions ahead of 2027. He urged INEC staff to ensure free, credible, and transparent elections, and called on the judiciary to steer clear of internal party issues.
Also speaking, Bassa youth leader Stephen Lawrence Bako described Hon. Yakubu as a seasoned politician with the experience to deliver if given the mandate. He said the aspirant’s declaration has reignited hope among grassroots members and serves as a unifying factor in the constituency. Bako, who is from Gurum Ward in Bassa LGA, maintained that the zoning arrangement should now favour Jos North and expressed confidence that Yakubu would win if he secures the PDP ticket.
Hon. Yakubu concluded that democracy thrives on participation and pledged to sell his agenda to delegates and constituents across the wards. He said his antecedents, resilience, and consistent loyalty to the PDP set him apart, adding that he is prepared to navigate the ethnic and religious complexities of Jos North/Bassa with inclusive representation.
