The member representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, PhD, OON, has called for a more decisive approach to Nigeria’s security challenges, rejecting proposals to rehabilitate bandits and other violent criminals.
Gagdi made the position known during an interview on Rhythm FM Jos, on the programme _“Viewpoint with Samson Omale,”_ monitored by our correspondent.
*“Neutralize at Point of Contact”*
The lawmaker said he does not support the rehabilitation of bandits, terrorists, kidnappers and other criminals responsible for the killing of innocent Nigerians.
“Let me state this unequivocally: I do not believe in taking bandits to court or rehabilitating them. They should be neutralized at the point of contact,” Gagdi stated.
“I know the government is concerned about human rights, but what about the human rights of innocent Nigerians who are being killed?”
He insisted that justice for victims and the protection of law-abiding citizens must remain the priority of government, arguing that sustainable peace can only be achieved when perpetrators of violent crimes face the full weight of the law.
“The first responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. We must demonstrate the political will to confront those who have chosen violence against innocent citizens,” he said.
*Backs State Police*
Gagdi also reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, saying evolving legal frameworks and current realities have strengthened his conviction that it will complement existing federal structures.
“My position has changed because the legal framework has evolved. If properly structured with the necessary safeguards, state police can strengthen our security system and improve the protection of lives and property,” he added.
According to him, stronger collaboration between federal and state governments is needed to improve intelligence gathering and ensure rapid response to emerging threats.
*Call for National Support*
The federal lawmaker urged Nigerians to support lawful initiatives aimed at restoring peace, noting that adequate empowerment of security agencies and bold policy decisions are required to restore public confidence.
His remarks come amid ongoing national debate on deradicalization, amnesty and rehabilitation programmes for repentant criminals.
Observers say Gagdi’s stance reflects the position of many communities that have suffered repeated attacks and are demanding tougher government action to end banditry and terrorism.
He expressed optimism that sustained reforms and stronger security policies would help curb criminality and guarantee lasting stability across the country.
