The Mangun Old Students’ Association (MAOSA) announced the celebration of the 50th anniversary of its alma mater, Government Science Secondary School (now Federal Government Science Technical College, Mangun), in a press release issued on Thursday. The statement, signed by MAOSA President Hon. Sunday Garba Biggs, expressed “great gratitude and satisfaction” as alumni gathered to commemorate five decades since the school’s founding.
Established on November 27, 1975 as Mwaghavul Community Secondary School, the institution was taken over by the Plateau State government in 1976 and renamed Government Secondary School. A later shift toward science education led to its redesignation as Government Science Secondary School, and it has now been federalised as the Federal Government Science Technical College, Mangun. Over the past half‑century, the school has produced graduates who have become leaders in sectors ranging from media, law, politics, medicine and business to the clergy, chieftaincy, academia, agriculture, technology and banking.
Alumni have remained a central pillar of the school’s development, contributing computers, boreholes, hostels, beds and chairs, as well as scholarships and assistance with fees, food and other necessities. Many former students have leveraged their networks to secure funding and resources that have helped curb infrastructural decay and improve learning conditions for current pupils.
The association noted that the planned elaborate convention could not be held due to the persistent insecurity affecting communities in the Mangu area, where genocidal attacks have claimed lives and property over the past two years. “Our hearts are with the families that have lost loved ones,” the release stated, calling on security agencies and government to intensify efforts to stem the violence.
MAOSA extended its appreciation to past and present teaching and non‑teaching staff for their dedication to shaping generations of students over the past 50 years. It also thanked fellow alumni for promoting the school’s legacy through their professional and personal endeavours, and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the institution’s continued growth.
The 50th‑anniversary celebration, described as a “silver jubilee” in the release, underscores the enduring impact of the Federal Government Science Technical College, Mangun, as a centre of knowledge, innovation and societal progress. The association concluded with a message of gratitude and a pledge to remain united in advancing the alma mater.
