Youth groups from across Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau State have held an awareness gathering to push for power rotation and speak against a possible fourth term ambition in the constituency.
The meeting, organised by the Mikang Youths Vanguard Coalition, brought together youths from Tehl, Piapung, Koenoem, and Garkawa districts under a non-partisan platform to discuss the future of political representation in Mikang.
Speaking during the gathering held at the Mikang Secretariat in Tunkus, President of the Tehl Youth Movement and the convener of the Mikang Youth Vanguard Coalition, Comrade Daniel Dajen, said the meeting was not a political rally but a platform for youths to defend fairness, inclusion, and equal representation.
“We are not against anybody. Everyone has the right to contest, but rotation is important because it gives every district a sense of belonging,” he said.
He argued that allowing one district to continue holding power for too long could weaken the spirit of fairness and political balance in Mikang.
Comrade Dajen also called on political leaders and the government to listen to the position of Mikang youths, insisting that zoning and rotation have helped to maintain peace and unity in the area.
Representatives from the four districts who spoke at the event stressed the need for peaceful engagement and urged youths not to allow politics to divide the local government.
The event was well attended by National Youth Presidents representing all ethnic groups in Mikang, alongside prominent stakeholders and sons and daughters of Mikang who are advocates for good governance and the protection of democratic rights.
A major highlight of the event was participants reaffirming their commitment to continue advocating for equity, justice, and peaceful political participation in Mikang ahead of the coming elections.
Political observers say the debate over zoning and the reported determination of the current Speaker to seek another term are already shaping conversations across Mikang ahead of the next elections. With different groups openly taking positions, many believe the political atmosphere in the constituency is gradually becoming more intense as 2027 approaches.
