*Mikang, Plateau State* – The All Progressives Congress House of Assembly primary in Mikang Local Government has been described as inconclusive, with party members alleging widespread irregularities and the hijack of the electoral process.
According to stakeholders and party faithful who monitored the exercise, voting took place only in Piapung Ward A, while the process was disrupted or did not hold in other wards. The crowd had gathered as early as 8:30 a.m. to vote for their preferred candidates.
Cross-sections of those present expressed disappointment over what they described as an attempt by some individuals to undermine the will of the people. They warned that if the issues were not addressed, it could affect the party’s chances in the 2027 elections by leaving many members aggrieved.
Speaking on the development, Barr. Namyel Trekuk Boayi, Legal Adviser of the APC in Plateau State and an indigene of Lalin Ward, said voting did not take place in most wards. He alleged that electoral officers were absent in several locations and that materials were allegedly taken away by officials, including the Commissioner for Women Affairs.
Boayi said he remained at the Lalin Ward venue from 10 a.m. until almost 6 p.m., but the electoral officer refused to proceed with voting. “It was glaringly shown that one of the aspirants was to be defeated,” he stated. He added that he had received reports and evidence from more than five wards where no election was conducted. “Some people just sat somewhere and wrote results and took them wherever they wanted,” he said.
Boayi called on the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and State Chairman, Hon. Rufus Bature, to intervene and order a fresh primary to restore credibility. He also appealed to Governor Caleb Mutfwang to constitute a neutral committee to oversee the process, stressing that “the people should be allowed to make their choice.”
Presenting a different account, Hon. Dio Lamun, Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development and a two-term former member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, said the process in Lalin Ward showed overwhelming support for Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil, Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly. Lamun alleged that opponents disrupted the exercise to avoid defeat and maintained that Gapyil would still win even if the election were repeated.
Both officials said the matter would be taken to the appropriate party structures for resolution. Stakeholders have urged the party leadership to act swiftly to prevent a breakdown of unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
