The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, in partnership with the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, opened the 13th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (NCCIDE) at the Crispan Suites and Event Centre in Jos. The five‑day gathering, running under the theme “Accelerating Inclusive Digital Transformation: Bridging Gaps and Fostering Sustainable Growth Through Innovation,” brings together senior government officials, industry leaders and technology stakeholders to chart a path for Nigeria’s digital future.
- In his welcome address, Mr. Lamba Peter Bot, Permanent Secretary of the Plateau State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, expressed delight at hosting the council and described the event as a renewed commitment to shaping the nation’s future through technology and inclusive growth. He emphasized that the theme is a call to action to close the connectivity divide, promote youth empowerment and drive sustainable development through innovation.
Engr. Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, highlighted the urgency of accelerating inclusive digital transformation across the country. He noted that digital technology now underpins key sectors and must be leveraged to secure Nigeria’s economic future. Engr. Gagare stressed the need for expanded broadband access, enhanced digital skills, robust regulatory frameworks and an environment that positions Nigeria as a leading hub for digital services and innovation.
The opening session was officially declared by Hon. Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Plateau State, who represented Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang. Dr. Shurkuk reiterated the council’s focus on equitable access, community empowerment and the creation of opportunities for all citizens, affirming Plateau State’s commitment to supporting startups, developing digital solutions and forging global partnerships.
Dr. Datong Dominic Gwanman, Director‑General of the Plateau State Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA), expressed pride that Plateau is hosting the 13th NCCIDE, citing the state government’s strong support for technology initiatives. He outlined PICTDA’s efforts to digitize school management systems and expand data‑driven solutions across sectors to promote inclusive development.
Mr. Abba Guguwa, Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, called for comprehensive memoranda to guide institutional transformation, asserting that such measures will accelerate processes and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic and societal advancement.
Dr. Garba Gandu, Senior Technical Adviser to the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, underscored the importance of strategic decisions, global best practices, and continuous upskilling to keep Nigeria competitive in the emerging technological landscape.
Engr. Nadungu Gagare concluded the session by reviewing proposals on advancing rural telecommunications and strengthening data‑privacy frameworks, emphasizing sustainable practices, job creation and mandatory training to fortify the nation’s digital economy.
The 13th NCCIDE continues through the week, with delegates expected to produce actionable recommendations aimed at bridging the digital divide, fostering innovation and ensuring that Nigeria’s digital transformation is both inclusive and sustainable.
