The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Plateau State Chapter, has assured National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members deployed to the state of adequate accommodation, security and a conducive environment throughout their service year.
ALGON Chairman, Hamisu Anani, gave the assurance on Friday during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II orientation course at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp in Du, Jos South LGA. He spoke on behalf of the 17 local government chairmen in the state.
Anani described the NYSC as one of Nigeria’s strongest platforms for national unity, cultural integration and selfless service, and said councils remain committed to collaborating with the scheme and other stakeholders to ensure corps members serve in a peaceful atmosphere despite isolated security challenges.
“Our Local Government Councils value your presence and the important contributions you will make in our communities. Many sectors, particularly education, healthcare, agriculture and community development, have benefited immensely from corps members,” he said.
The ALGON chairman urged the corps members to be disciplined, law-abiding and hardworking, and to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme for self-reliance after service. He also cautioned them against violence, drug abuse and cybercrime.
As part of support for the scheme, Anani announced a N5 million donation on behalf of the 17 chairmen for corps members’ welfare. The chairmen later inspected the SAED exhibition where corps members showcased vocational skills acquired during orientation.
*Local Councils Reaffirm Commitment*
Jos South LGA Chairman, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, urged corps members to disregard negative perceptions about the state, noting that the hitch-free orientation was proof that Plateau is safe for service. He said Jos South has provided one of the best corps lodges in the state and will continue to prioritise their welfare.
Shendam LGA Chairman, Hon. Kemi Nshe, appealed to corps members not to seek relocation. “Relocating is not always the solution… Rather than giving up, let us remain committed to building our communities,” he said. Nshe announced a monthly allowance of N150,000 for medical doctors and N75,000 for nurses and other medical personnel posted to Shendam, with additional welfare support for other corps members.

Plateau NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Yavala Jonathan Iliya, commended the 17 chairmen for visiting the camp to reassure corps members of safety and welfare. He said the scheme would continue to equip corps members with entrepreneurial and vocational skills through SAED.
Speaking for the corps members, Blessing Samose and Yusuf Obafemi said they found Plateau peaceful and hospitable and pledged to complete their one-year service in the state.
