THE PRESS RELEASE OF THE BEROM YOUTHS MOULDER-ASSOCIATION ANOTHER GENOCIDE AT ATOSO OF FAN DISTRICT, BARKIN LADI IN PLATEAU STATE, 17TH DECEMBER, 2025
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has received with deep shock, grief, and indignation the brutal attack best described as “genocide and mass atrocity” on Atoso village in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, which occurred on Tuesday night at about 09:00pm at a mining site by Terrorist group known as Fulani militants.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of twelve (12) innocent persons, with three (3) others were abducted and taken alive while five (5) currently hospitalised with varying degrees of injuries. This horrifying act has plunged the entire Ratoso community and the Berom nation into mourning.
The President of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, who personally visited the scene of the incident alongside members of the association’s leadership, described the scene as “heartbreaking incident” that followed the gruesome murder of 4 children at Dorong village of Foron District in the same Local Government Area, where rain of terror has continued to render humanity of Berom Ethnic nationality and other Nigerians “soft-target” at the mercy of the attackers. This is therefore, condemned in the strongest terms.
The BYM expresses profound sympathy to the bereaved families and noted that the repeated killing of innocent citizens in their ancestral land is unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue in spite of the early warning alert and signals always sent to the authorities that be.
Following the unabated onslaught and pogroms being daily perpetrated by the same non-state actors called “Fulani militants/terrorist networks,” we passionately urge the both the Federal and State Government as well as all relevant security agencies to immediately rise up to their respective statutory responsibility, commencing a comprehensive, transparent, and decisive investigation into the ongoing mass killings, with the aim of bringing the perpetrators and their collaborators and/sponsors to justice, failure of which will indelibly erase trust and expectations for accountability thereby affecting loyalty from Nigerians, especially within the State as such encourages criminal elements and deepen insecurity in the country.
We equally urge government to urgently strengthen Local Security Outfits, more security deployment and surveillance in and around affected areas such as Fan District and other vulnerable communities in Barkin Ladi LGA so as to avert the recurrence of similar tragedies, especially in this yuletide season, which the terrorist elements have declared as a period to be marred with bloodbath of Christians and other non-Christians that are not of Fulani extraction.
While the corpses of those killed have been deposited at the mortuary, awaiting mass burial, the BYM commiserates with the families of the deceased, and also calls for intense vigilance as well as calling on Government to come to the aid of those injured. Meanwhile, security agents have equally been urged to swiftly swing into action and secure the release of 3 people abducted by the said Fulani while ban on open grazing be upheld and enforced in order to curb down the abuse of it since grazing by the Fulani has become a means of fostering terrorism.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association reiterates its unwavering commitment to the pursuit of peace, justice, and the protection of Berom lives and ancestral land. BYM will continue to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders until lasting security and justice are achieved.
