*Mikang, Plateau State* – The All Progressives Congress House of Assembly primary in Mikang Local Government has become a subject of dispute, with party officials presenting sharply different accounts of how the exercise unfolded across the constituency’s wards.
Barr. Namyel Trekuk. Boayi, Legal Adviser of the APC in Plateau State and an indigene of Lalin Ward, said voting did not take place in most wards. Speaking after monitoring the process, he alleged that electoral officers were absent in several locations and that materials were allegedly taken away by officials, including the Commissioner for Women Affairs.
Boayi said he remained at the Lalin Ward venue from 10 a.m. until almost 6 p.m., but the electoral officer refused to proceed with voting. “It was glaringly shown that one of the aspirants was to be defeated,” he stated. He added that he had received messages and evidence from more than five wards where no election was conducted.
According to him, only Piapung A Ward recorded voting in the entire local government. He argued that where no election took place, the party must order a repeat to allow delegates to exercise their franchise. “Some people just sat somewhere and wrote results and took them wherever they wanted,” he said.
Boayi called on the APC leadership and Governor Caleb Mutfwang to intervene and constitute a neutral committee to oversee a fresh process. He warned that imposing candidates not chosen by the people would harm the party’s chances in the general election. “Let the people be allowed to make their choice. It shouldn’t be the choice of a few persons,” he appealed.
Presenting a different account, Hon. Dio Lamun, Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development and a two-term former member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, said the process in Lalin Ward showed overwhelming support for Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil, Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly.
Lamun alleged that opponents disrupted the exercise to avoid defeat. “They couldn’t allow the people to be counted because the field is very wide and they would lose woefully,” he said. He maintained that even if the election were repeated multiple times, Gapyil would still emerge victorious in the area.
Both officials said the matter would be taken to the appropriate party structures for resolution. While Boayi insisted on a fresh election to restore credibility, Lamun urged the electoral panel to investigate and uphold what he described as the will of the people in Lalin Ward.
