Residents of Rantya Mini Layout and Longwa Community off Domkat Bali Road have called on the Plateau State Government to intervene and complete the abandoned road rehabilitation and gully erosion control project in their area as the rainy season approaches. The largely populated community said a functional road network is urgently needed to ease movement and boost socio-economic activities.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, Elder Davou Dalyop and some residents commended Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for the ongoing environmental development projects across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis. He listed road rehabilitation, gully erosion control, city beautification, and the urban mass transport system under the Greater Jos Master Plan as initiatives that are giving Jos a modern outlook in line with global cities.
The community expressed appreciation for the administration’s focus on infrastructure despite security challenges, describing the Governor’s commitment to capital projects as courageous and worthy of public support. They noted that Jos’s growth as an administrative, commercial, and tourist hub is closely tied to the quality and functionality of its road infrastructure.
However, the residents raised concern that while a minor part of their neighbourhood has benefited from the ongoing rehabilitation by the State Direct Labour Agency, a larger section with high social and commercial activity remains neglected. They said deplorable roads and expanding gully erosion continue to subject them to untold hardship.
According to them, extending the rehabilitation exercise to Rantya Mini Layout and Longwa would harmonize the road network and uplift both social and commercial activities in line with the state’s slum upgrading programme. They stressed that improved access would enhance daily life and economic opportunities for residents.
The community also highlighted its tourism potential, citing landmarks such as the Solomon Lar Amusement Park and the Millennium Hotel, the only indigenous three-star hotel in Jos. They said completion of the road project could pave the way for upgrading the hotel to a five-star facility and showcase the scenic beauty of the settlement, which boasts a 95 percent indigenous population with diverse cultural heritage.
Residents further noted that good roads would serve as a springboard for talent discovery and youth entrepreneurship by improving connectivity and access within the area. They emphasized that functional infrastructure remains the foundation for socio-economic development and a key tool in addressing urbanization challenges.
In their direct appeal to the Governor, the community urged the State Direct Labour Agency and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to extend the rehabilitation exercise to Rantya Mini Layout and Longwa and complete the remaining abandoned projects. They expressed optimism that government intervention would bring lasting relief and align the neighbourhood with the broader vision for a modern Jos.
