Senator Diket Satso Plang, representing Plateau Central Senatorial District, has donated 18-seater buses to the two Colleges of Health Technology in the zone to ease transportation challenges and improve training for future health workers.
The buses were presented at a ceremony attended by Plateau State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kachollom Gang, alongside management, staff, and students of Mwaghavul College of Health Technology, Pushit, and College of Health Technology, Pankshin. The two institutions are the only colleges of health technology in Plateau Central.
Speaking during the presentation, Sen. Plang said the donation followed direct requests from the schools and was informed by their critical role in producing and retraining healthcare personnel for communities across Plateau and beyond. He noted that continuous training is essential given rising demand for quality healthcare and emerging public health challenges.
“These institutions are not only producing health personnel, they also help in re-educating health workers to meet contemporary health challenges. Any support given to them is a contribution towards sustaining quality healthcare services,” Plang stated. He added that his visit allowed him to assess their needs firsthand and pledged to explore further support for infrastructure and human capital development.
The senator also commended the Plateau State Government for rehabilitating and upgrading rural health
facilities, stressing that stakeholders must complement government efforts to improve health infrastructure and training.
Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kachollom Gang, described the gesture as a significant boost to health education. She highlighted Pankshin College as one of the oldest health training institutions in Nigeria and called for sustained investment to expand facilities and meet growing student demand. She assured the colleges of government support in accreditation, staffing, and access to development opportunities, while urging students to remain focused and excel in their careers.
Provost of College of Health Technology, Pankshin, Mr. Emmanuel Mahan, said the bus would improve mobility for students and staff during academic and clinical activities. He disclosed that nine programmes have been accredited and the college is set to commence Higher National Diploma courses, appealing for more support in infrastructure and staff development.
Similarly, Provost of Mwaghavul College of Health Technology, Pushit, Mr. Ignatius Yamson, said the institution had long awaited such intervention. He noted the bus would be used to transport students to rural clinical posting centres and for educational excursions, assuring that it would be properly maintained for maximum benefit.
Sen. Plang assured both institutions of his continued commitment to healthcare education, describing the donation as part of a broader partnership to improve health outcomes in Plateau Central and Nigeria.
